9th Grade – (Union County 6 - Greer 20)

The 9th grade Jackets had a rough night with not much going right. The offense could never get rolling due in part to five fumbles. That put the defense on the field most of the night and they played well according to coach Will Hickson.

But there were plays which stood out during the game…kicker Dayne Jackson had a couple of good punts, one for 30 and another for 35…Avion Carter grabbed a fumble and ran for another 15 yards…Gerald Alman almost beat the quarterback to the snap and stripped the ball away on the handoff taking for a good ten-yard run…at the half, coach Hickson asked the team if they had accomplished what they wanted to do which was be more physical than Greer and the answer was "no." "Who wants it?" he asked. "Go take it. The lowest man wins the blocking game. I want us to come out the second half and ram it down their throats."…Bubba Means had a solid 25-yard kickoff return to the 42… D’Extra Goggins had a great hit in the third quarter for a loss…Union had trouble with snaps from center, handoffs, fumbles and only had two drives through three quarters…Devian Davis had a nice runback of a kickoff for 25 yards in the 4th quarter…Corey Land made the Jacket’s big play of the night, scooping up a fumble and running 70 yards for a TD.

Junior Varsity (Union County 14 - Greer 28)

The JV fared somewhat better than the 9th grade team but still came up on the short end of the score. Coach Caleb Clark used to first-time quarterbacks in the game, Ricky Rice and Josh Armstrong throughout the game. Union scored first with 3:27 left in the first quarter on a touchdown run of 10 yards by Garrick Pendergraph who also added the two-point conversion. That was followed by a Greer score with Union leading 8-6 at the half. Greer added six more in the 3rd quarter.

Union’s second score came in the 4th quarter on a quarterback keeper with Josh Armstrong taking it into the end zone on a 65-yard TD, aided by a key block by wide receiver Robert Humphries. At that point the score was 14-14. Greer and went on to score two more TDs.

Pendergraph and Armstrong hooked up for a big 45-yard pass play…Ricky Rice blocked a punt giving Union possession on the Greer 25-yard line…heard from one of the coaches shouting at the players: "When I tell you right, you go left."…Deion Smith had a big 7-yard sack…co-captains were Zack Ledford and Dillon West…ball-hawk db Calvin Williams made a text-book interception of a Geer pass, grabbing the ball literally out of the receivers hands…running for his life, quarterback Josh Armstrong ran 40 yards East and West before he was finally able to get loose for a five yard gain…at the end of the game, coach Clark told the team that he liked their effort but fumbles and mistakes were costly. "Some guys had to step up tonight and play positions they had never played and I am proud of what they did."
