The rain poured and Union County scored, as the Yellow Jackets defeated Chapman 26-0 on homecoming Friday night at Union County Stadium.
"We took control early on the line of scrimmage," said coach David Lipsey.
"Offensively, we got some things clicking early. Got fullback play in, Bradley (Robbins) made a good run to get us on top and we pretty much took care of business."
All the points were scored in the first half. The second half went by quick with a lot of running and rain. The game lasted just two hours with homecoming festivities at halftime.
After Drell Smith recovered a fumble for the Jackets, Robbins opened the scoring with a 25-yard touchdown run.
"I think we'll be more effective the more we get our fullback involved," said Lipsey. "Our wingbacks are running pretty good, but we have to continue to work to get the fullback plays going."
Union County then went 87 yards in eight plays to score. A big play was a 42-yard run by quarterback Nick Monroe. Michael Mebane ran 6-yards for the score.
After the Jackets recovered another fumble, Lamont Edney ran for a 13-yard touchdown.
Chapman (0-8, 0-3) botched a punt late in the half and Mebane scored on a 7-yard run with 27.9 seconds left in the half.
Alex Tucker kicked three extra points in the first half.
"Our personnel fits what we're doing," said Lipsey. "We're real proud of the kids. It's a big region win."
Chapman fumbled four times in the game and Union County gave up two interceptions in wet conditions. The Jacket defense pitched a shutout.
"The weather helped us and hindered them," said Lipsey.
UCHS (4-4, 2-1) travels to Clinton next Friday.
"It's always a tough place to play," said Lipsey.
"They've got an outstanding program. It will be a big challenge for
