Gaffney versus Union County usually is a battle. On Friday, it was a beating. Gaffney defeated UCHS 49-13.

"We started four sophomores on defense and four seniors on offense - the only way they are going to get better is to play," said coach David Lipsey.

"To go through these battles, to keep fighting, to keep our attitude right and our head up - that's the making of a football team that's going to play hard the rest of the season."

Gaffney got on the board first with an impressive 89-yard, 16-play drive that ate a lot of clock. The Indians mixed the pass and the run well and Jeremiah Cochran scored on a 3-yard run.

On UCHS' next play, John Michaels intercepted a a pass and returned it 15 yards for a touchdown. After a bad snap by the Jackets, Gaffney scored again on a 6-yard touchdown run by Kenard Lipscomb. The Indians led 21-0 after one quarter.

"You can't give them anything," said Lipsey. "They are an excellent football team. They are big, strong, physical and have speed. It was a tough match up for us."

Robert Davidson scored on a 58-yard touchdown run, Cochran scored on a 19-yard run and Joe Craig ran 34 yards for a touchdown just before the half to give the Indians a 42-0 halftime lead.

The Yellow Jackets had just two first downs and 88 yards at the break. The only first half highlight for UCHS was a 53-yard run by Lamont Edney, who finished with 151 yards for the game.

Gaffney, meanwhile, put up 292 yards in the first half, more than 200 yards on the ground. The Indians  finished with more than 400 yards offense, more than 300 yards on the ground.

In the third quarter, Craig scored on a 9-yard run for a 49-0 Indian lead.

All of Josh Harris' kicks were good for Gaffney in the rout.

Union County finally got on the board with a 49-yard run by Edney with just over 6 minutes left. Nick Monroe found Brandon Newton for a short touchdown pass with 30 seconds left.

"I was proud of our seniors," said Lipsey. "We had some seniors that did a good job of leading. I challenged them at halftime."

UCHS (1-2) travels to 4A Laurens next Friday, as the Jackets continue to play larger schools to prepare for region play.

"It's another 4A team, another very good program - coach (Greg) Lawson (a former Jacket assistant coach) has done an excellent job over there," said Lipsey. "They are an excellent team. We go back to work and try to get better. We've got two more non-region games."
