GREER - Union County ran over Riverside 42-14 on Friday night.

Michael Mebane and Lamont Edney left no doubt, as the Yellow Jackets rushed for 446 yards. Mebane finished with 228 yards rushing and three touchdowns.

Edney had 156 yards rushing and two touchdowns.

"That's what this offense (double wing) is designed to do, run the football," said UCHS coach David Lipsey. "We had some big plays tonight. Michael Mebane had one of his best games, a phenomenal game. Our offensive line really got off of the ball. We ran the offense tonight the way it should be run."

Mebane opened the second half scoring with a 75-yard touchdown run. He later added a 22-yard touchdown run.

Edney ran 88 yards for a score on the first play of the fourth quarter. Alex Tucker made all his extra points.

The defense pitched a second half shutout, holding Riverside after the Jackets fumbled the kickoff that opened the half.

"I thought our defense bent a little tonight, but didn't break," said Lipsey.

Union County led 21-14 at halftime. At the start of the game, the Jackets recovered a Riverside fumble and marched 67 yards in 10 plays, all on the ground, to score. John Simmons Fallaw went in from 1-yard out.

On its next possession, UCHS had an apparent touchdown run by Edney called back on a holding penalty. The Jackets fumbled while going into the end zone later.

Mebane ran for 28 yards to set up Union County's second touchdown, as he went in from 10 yards out.

Riverside (2-5, 0-2) answered with a 35-yard touchdown catch by Daniel Long.

The score was set up by a 38-yard Alex Poag catch.

Mebane broke free for 22 yards and then 43 yards to set up a 4-yard Edney score.

"Our backs are finding the holes now," said Lipsey. "They know where to hit it."

Two 15-yard penalties on UCHS helped set up Riverside's second touchdown, a 25-yard catch by Poag with 16.8 seconds left before the break.

That wasn't near enough, as the loss spoiled Riverside's homecoming.

UCHS (3-4, 1-1) hosts Chapman, led by former Jacket Kevin Farmer, next Friday for homecoming.

"All the work is paying off," said Lipsey. "Hopefully, they'll build off this."
