SPARTANBURG - Union County played with emotion last week and was rewarded with a 33-32 win over Chester. A different team showed up to face Spartanburg on Friday and was whipped 31-0.

The Vikings amassed more than 300 yards offense and held the Jackets in check.

"I though we were ready to play," said Yellow Jacket coach David Lipsey. "It was as different as night and day from last week. We just didn't have that fire, didn't come out ready to play. Credit Spartanburg, they did a good job. They were the attacker and we were on our heals, and that leads to the score that we have."

Spartanburg got on the board first when Kelvin Wilkins intercepted a UCHS pass, giving the Vikings the ball on the 12-yard line. Two plays later, quarterback Conelius Jones ran six yards for a touchdown and Chris Graham kicked his first of four extra points.

The first play of the second quarter was another interception by Spartanburg's Rashawn Brown. Hillstock ran 50 yards for a touchdown.

The Vikings added a 6-yard touchdown run by Mykelle Jones. Conelius Jones scored from 3 yards out with 23.5 seconds left in the first half to give Spartanburg a 28-0 lead.

On Spartanburg's first drive of the second half, Graham kicked a 46-yard field goal for the final points of the game.

UCHS had a couple of opportunities to score late, but came away with no points.

"We'll go back and learn from it," said Lipsey. "That's why you play these games. Definitely some things showed up tonight that we need to work on. We'll go back next week and try to correct (the mistakes) and hopefully make us a better football team."

A bright spot for Union County was hard running by Lamont Edney, pilling up yards in the second half when the game was out of reach. He had 95 yards on the night.

"He's a tough runner," said Lipsey. "He gets his pads low and every time he gets it he runs to score."

UCHS (1-1) gets a bye week next Friday and hosts another 4A school, Gaffney, on Sept. 12.

"We'll keep pounding and working," said Lipsey. "Let's see how we come out of it - stay together, go to work and make a better football team. That's our hope, that's our goal."
