PIEDMONT - Union County was eliminated from the Class 3A playoffs on Friday night, losing 21-17 to Woodmont.

The Wildcats marched 70 yards for the winning points and quarterback Johnnie Houston scored on a 1-yard touchdown run with 8:13 remaining to put Woodmont ahead.

Union County came back down the field, but fumbled the ball away on Woodmont's 10-yard line with 4:37 remaining. The WildCats got the ball back and were helped in running out the clock by a pass interference call and an unsportsmanlike penalty. Houston made a fourth down conversion to eat even more clock.

The Jackets got the ball back with 15.8 seconds left, but two incomplete passes and a tackle on a lateral ended UCHS' season.

"Give Woodmont credit," said UCHS coach David Lipsey. "They made the plays when they had to. We left some points on the field."

The game was tied 7-7 at halftime. Union County opened the second half with a 73-yard drive that resulted in a 24-yard Alex Tucker field goal. Woodmont answered with a 58-yard touchdown run by Houston.

"He's a good athlete; he's got speed," said Lipsey. "He makes plays for them. We lost contain on that side."

Michael Mebane broke free for 65 yards to set up a 2-yard touchdown run by Bradley Robbins. Tucker's point-after gave UCHS a 17-14 lead going into the fourth quarter.

"We played with a lot of effort," said Lipsey.

In the first half, Woodmont opened the game with a 68-yard scoring drive. Zach Curenton ran for a 12-yard touchdown. Lamont Edney scored on a 3-yard run to tie the game.

"I appreciate the effort the seniors gave all year," said Lipsey. "They played hard and with a lot of pride. We thank them for their effort.

"We've got a lot of kids coming back. A lot of kids got experience. We're going to get on them, get them to do right in school, do right in the weight room and come out next year a little better."

Union County finishes the season at 5-6. Woodmont (8-3) travels to Chester for a second round game next week.
