Union County's defense held its offense in check, winning 48-34 on Thursday in the first Black & Gold Game.

The offense wore white and the defense black and hundreds of Yellow Jacket fans cheered for both during the scrimmage.

A special points system was developed by coaches and the defense scored often.

Eric Beaty and LeBrian Smith both had interceptions, each worth five points.

Will Smith and Jordan Sims each returned fumbles for touchdowns.

Deion Thompson caught a touchdown pass and Keiston Stevens scored on a quarterback sneak for the offense.

The score was 32-25 at the break. The second half was more of the same, but Jeremy Porter did turn a nice catch and run into six points for the offense.

“The defense has made a lot of progress from the start of spring practice until today,” said coach David Lipsey. “We have a lot of quickness and are real aggressive. We don't have a lot of size, but we're pretty quick.”

The offense will look to make improvement.

“We made too many turnovers,” said Lipsey. “We have to eliminate the turnovers. We have a young offensive line and will continue to work.

“Deion Thompson was a force at wide receiver, Keiston Stevens had some nice throws and we had some nice runs, but we were not consistent on offense.”

UCHS lost several players on both sides of the line to graduation and Lipsey said the Jackets are starting over.

They still have plenty of time to work out the kinks before the first game in August.
